The History of the Erzgebirge

A region with tradition and a future

As its name gives away, the historical development of the Erzgebirge is closely tied to mining. The first settlers came here in the middle of the 12th century from the Main-Franconia region, which one can still detect today in the dialect spoken by the people of the Erzgebirge. When silver ore was first discovered in 1168 near Christiansdorf, which is present-day Freiberg, numerous miners, merchants, charcoal makers and vagabonds followed the “First Silver Rush”. Long ago, the Erzgebirge was a “Miriquidi”, a large dark forest. It was only after silver was discovered that the region was given its current name.

The Erzgebirge quickly developed into an important supplier of ore, and mining boomed. Over the course of centuries, industrialisation occurred as is rarely found in a mountainous region. For a long time, the mining of silver and tin, as well as arsenic, lead, iron, cobalt, nickel, uranium, bismuth, tungsten and zinc was an important industry for the Erz Mountain residents. After the glory days of mining came to an end in the 17th century, the people had to look for other jobs to earn a living. From then on, lace-making, Posamentieren, the decoration of garments with braids and tassels and wood-carving became important industries. Soon, important trade routes created business relationships between Annaberg, Dresden and Bohemia.

“Gedacht. Gemacht.” (“Thought. Done.”) has always been the motto of the Erz Mountain people. At the beginning of the 20th century, the region produced the first metal car bodies in serial production. Machines for the production of cans, forming presses or Kaiser’s baking pans are products which originated in the Erzgebirge. Tradition and innovation are still the Erzgebirge’s slogans today.
